Young American Showcase Online

Before American Idol, before the Back Street Boys, even before NSYNC there was Young American Showcase. This is an online community designed for Showcase members who want to reunite, share and reflect upon our unique experiences touring as musicians, to network, and ignite lively discussions. The ability to share ideas and opinions could stimulate the process of laying a 21st century foundation for the next generation of musicians and artists! YAS online unites all members of Young American Showcase from 1972-1993 and is comprised of band members and staff from Free Fare, Shalom, Freedom Jam, The Edge, and XL. Thank you and GOOD NIGHT!

Congrats To Terry!!! Terry Fator WINS America's Got Talent TV show 2007

Hello Everyone,

I emailed Terry a few weeks back. He said the whole experience has been totally amazing. He wanted me to say Hello and Thanks to all the Showcase Alums out there who voted for him, he really appreciated it. He also said that it would be great to get together sometime. Somehow I know this victory won't change Terry (as a person) one bit. My Family and I could not be happier for him. It looks like he will be coming out here to Vegas. I am very excited about it. I hope to get to see him and hang out. I personally never toured with Terry but one of my life long friends (Grant Taskerud/Volz) did. Grant told me he was amazing back then, over 20 years ago. America needs to know he does much more than what has been seen on TV. He is a Magician, Singer, Songwriter, Comedian, and a Brilliant Entertainer and best yet a Christian.. Here is the 86-87 Freedom Jam Poster.

The Absence of Sound

To paraphrase a famous saying "If a band folds but all of us are too busy to notice were they really making any noise?"

The answer is yes! Heaven...and hundreds of kids noticed.

Our brother of the van, Chris Lundquist, has informed us, the Showcase community, of Shade Tree's demise, having absconded (headed for home) with the affections of many a Mid-Western youth. After a brief note to Chris I kept watching the blog for other reactions.

Nothing.

Maybe you sent your note directly to Chris. Great! This is one of those "if the shoe fits" things. Folks...this is just to stimulate information gathering, not to chastise. Who am I to do that? Chris had 3 of the last 5 blogs on our site...the end of tour wrapup from the spring, the info about the effect of the hurricane and the addition of a new bass player and start of Sep tour, and the now famous "Elvis has left the building" notice.

Showcase '08--That's a Wrap

Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has left the building.  Literally.  Unfortunately, he's not coming back anytime soon.  Sadly, I must inform you that last week the Shade Tree band decided to move on to pursue other goals.  And since this isn't like the old Showcase days when we had multiple groups and could interchange bands or replace performers, the gap has rendered the company grounded, unable to sustain itself.  Thus Dave Walker has moved on, shutting down operations.

I realize this is sudden news, however it wasn't entirely unforeseen, and God was instrumental in bringing it to a close at the right time.  There's a season for everything, and we did our best with what we had these last 2 years (and the years before I came on).  Thankfully, the band stayed the course to the end.  Over 50% of students returned to the last two nightshows.  In Keith's (drummer) own final words:  "We love this ministry, we love being able to talk to people, which last night Dustin [guitarist and brother] and I were able to talk to two girls about why they should become Christians, and what it means to believe in God...  I was able to talk to them as much as I possibly could - I've got a horrible cold and lost my voice!  But nothing is stopping me from saying what I need to say."--Praise God that all was not lost!

Showcase Tour Update Sept 08

Greetings again Showcasers!

Shade Tree has been on the road now for about 6 weeks, and it's been one of the most "unusual" tours we've had.  Lots of ups and downs, as the Lord is teaching us all to live each day surrendered to Him.  Almost every week has had some unexpected hurdle or hardship to overcome, some avoidable and some outside of our control—the latest being the aftermath of Hurricane Ike in Kentucky!  Here in Ohio and in KY we had 60 mph winds all day last Sunday which destroyed trees and knocked out power all around, and many schools were out this week with no power.  So, while they've had many great shows and high returns in Kentucky and Illinois, they've also had some shows cancelled, died, or just plain weird.  A K-5 elementary school the other day, the boys thought the show died, almost cancelled the nightshow, only to find out 60% of the kids bought tickets!  The same week they also had their first real "death show" at a big high school.  So it's been all over the board lately… God is definitely showing us who's the Boss.  Certainly not us.

So, as we continue to uphold this ministry and rely on God to sustain it, we pray for His wisdom, power, and blessing on it, that we can bring His message of salvation and hope to more and more kids.  As always, your help is appreciated in any way you can contribute.  Financially dare I say we are on pretty thin ice right now, so that's a big concern as well.

Also pray for Showcase alum Randy Merritt, who is eager to help book shows and is contacting schools near Atlanta.  Brenda Peterson had also started to book shows in Indiana, but had to shelve it for now due to surgery.

Showcase '08 Tour Wrap-Up

Phil 1:2-6  "Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.  I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."

If we have seen anything this year, it's been that this is not Showcase's ministry or the band's ministry, it's GOD's ministry, and He has been faithful and active to lead and sustain it.  We're nearing the end of the '08 Tour, and it's been a wild and wooly ride, but with every bump in the road the Lord has been right there to provide and lead the way!  To briefly recap, tour started last August with the combined members of New Anthem and Shade Tree, then after Christmas the New Anthem members had moved on (one due to death in the family, the other to the military).  We re-launched in March with a new guitarist and bass player, and absolutely blew away southern Illinois (averaged almost 50% returns to the nightshows!).

Deja View

Deja View

Indeed the times they are a’ retro! Everything old is new again. The definition of déjà vu is an experience usually accompanied by a compelling sense of familiarity, and also a sense of "eeriness", "strangeness", or "weirdness". The concerts keep coming but they are eerily familiar. Rocking …chairs. This weekend, here in the beautiful metropolis of Columbus, OH, we had Hank Williams Jr/Lynyrd Skynyrd  on one evening and Billy Joel on another. Recent and future concerts include Barry Manilow, Bob Dylan, Bruce and the band, Van Halen, The Police, Bon Jovi, Judas Priest and their “Metal Masters” tour and probably Led Zep, somewhere in Ohio.

The Terry Fator show in St. Pete, April 18, 2008

Lowell, Barb, Ralph & Chris Watkins and myself were Terry's guests at his show in St. Pete at the Mahaffey Theater. There were 2,200 in attendance for the fabulous show, which included a wonderful shout out to Lowell. Afterward, we hit a local Spanish restaurant for a great late dinner. Many memories were shared.

Here's to you, Terry. May your 15 minutes last at least 15 years :)

Back in the studio!

Howdy folks!

As many (or maybe not) of you know, Larry Norman passed away in Feb. I was blessed to have played on one of Larry's albums "In Another Land" and one that he produced for Randy Stonehill, "Welcome To Paradise". I recently received an email from a Christian recording artist, Richard Cummins, who asked if I would be willing to lay down drums for a re-do of "Song For A Small Circle Of Friends", which I played on originally. I was honored to say "YES!". It's now recorded and if you're interested, you can hear it on Richard's website: www.richardcummins.com. Richard is 34 years old, but was greatly influenced by the "Christian Rock" music that came out of that era. He credits Larry's, Randy's, and Phil Keaggy's music for leading him to the Lord.

Showcase Camp Was Never Like This in Florida!

Greetings again Showcasers!

Well, the first week of March we had Rehearsal Camp, shut in with 2 feet of snow in Columbus Ohio!  After our two veterans Adam and John Paul have moved on, we've found two new performers and a new manager who are ready to take on the challenge!  The laid-back "New Adam" Walters on bass, and Kyle Yap on guitar and vocals, are fitting in very well with Dustin and Keith Brown from Shade Tree.  Kyle is a little firecracker on guitar and vocals/fronting, and he and Adam both are good, energetic speakers who are quickly learning and applying the Showcase concepts.  The new manager, Richard "Pat" Patterson, is an energetic young man with a great heart and experience, who is keeping things running.

We also found what we're calling "God's Trailer".  In our search for an equipment trailer, a band I was recording offered to trade their trailer for a some recording time.  The kicker was that the guy originally bought the trailer to haul his drums, and the reason he became a drummer in the first place was because he saw Freedom Jam in 1984 and was so blown away that he had to play drums!  So we need to thank the FJ drummer who toured Ohio in '84, apparently he jumped over his drumset during Van Halen's "Jump" and impressed this kid so much he wanted to be a drummer.  So now we have his trailer.  Funny how God works!

So, we hit the road last week for Louisville KY, my son Nate (who previously toured with New Anthem) and I overseeing/training/guiding, and let me tell you the first show right out of the box was pretty great, and 33% of the school came back for the nightshow and heard the gospel!  All the schools so far have been extremely hospitable, the first school faculty took us all out to dinner, and we even prayed with them after the nightshow for their school.

Keith's dayshow wrap is powerful as well, speaking on bullying, suicide, respect, and reaching out to each other.  After two of the first three dayshows they had students approach the band to relate very serious personal issues and get help and encouragement.  We were also told of a nearby highschool where tragically six girls have made a pact with each other, that once a month one of them would commit suicide.  And three of them have already.  So please pray for them, and that we will be able to perform at that school and possibly make an impact.

This year promises to be a fruitful adventure for this band, they are all excited and humble, and really have a heart of compassion for the kids and the ministry.  We pray that the Lord will honor their efforts.

Please pray for continued safety, unity, impact, and focus for the guys and for the students and faculty they will be meeting over the next months.

My Documentary was Just Picked up by PBS

Hey gang, we've been fairly quite on my latest documentary since we
were not 100% sure of our shows status, but it's now confirmed.

I produced this feature length documentary in HD (it's very educational) and completed it late last year. It was officially picked up by PBS and is now airing on TV. I've listed most of the details below. If you want more details go to PBS.org : "The Better Hour" click this link below to see the DVD.
http://www.shoppbs.org/product/index.jsp?productId=2991109&cp&kw=the+better+hour&origkw=%22the+better+hour%22&sr=1

The best way to find out when it's airing outside of the LA market is to go to www.PBS.org then to "station finder" and enter your zip code. You will be able to search within that zip code under the Programs to see when it airs in your market.

The HD version will not air until at least March and probably air in HD then. This first run will be in standard def.

Please
pass along this information to everyone who might like to see a great
documentary on the life of William Wilberforce and the abolition of
slave trade; and be sure to set your TIVOs to record it!

Bass Player Wanted for Showcase '08

Greetings Showcasers, and Happy New Year, 2008-ish years after our Lord's birth!

Just a quick update, the current Showcase band Shade Tree finished up 2007 on a high note, averaging 45% returns in southern Illinois, with arguably the best member lineup we've had to this point. As of January John Paul, the standout guitarist and peformer, has moved on after 5 years with New Anthem and Shade Tree to join the army, starting toward a longtime goal of ministering to people physically and spiritually as a paramedic. We wish him Godspeed, and pray for his future.

That leaves a hole in the band. Shade Tree is currently sidelined until a new member can fill the spot for at least the 2008 tour. Dustin will be moving up to lead guitar, and they need a bass player . What better people to ask than Showcase Alumni? No, we're not asking you to get out your old spandex or leather and lose 40 pounds to go on the road... but I'm sure you know someone 18-24 who might be a good fit for a modern Showcase band. If you have someone in mind, friend or family, please forward a bio, audio/video, facebook, myspace, whatever you have to Dave Walker or myself.

We hope to get the band back on the road in February, and get back out there where the people are and the need is! So we need to find, audition, and train someone in the next 2-3 weeks. Please let us know asap if you have someone in mind.

Also, another upcoming need will be a new equipment Trailer. Ideally 6x12 tandem axle with a loading ramp. If any of you has a lead on something close to that which we could use, please let us know.

Thanks and let the Spirit of the Lord guide you,

Showcase 45 Record: Free Fare (Source e-Bay)

This is a Freefare 45 on Showcase label, both sides are mono.

side A has birth of a soldier, writer and vocals by Mike Putman, it has some surface scratches but looks to be in not bad shape.

Side B has get away, writer Larry Smith, vocals Rodney Ford, I don't see any marks on side B, the label is in excellent condition as you can see, produced by Lance Abair. Source: e-Bay

Showcase POSTER

I went to my moms last week to visit and went through
some stuff I have been saving there. I have petty cash reports, mgr papers ,a
contract etc. the best thing I found was a (Scott Ross artist) Free Fare poster that my brother saved from one of the times free fare came to his school. He is 6yrs older than I and he always
took me to the shows and between his high school years and mine we always went
to free fare and freedom jam shows. I later came to play drums as it was a dream
from the time I was 10 or so.

Showcase Rumers... (TRUCK Driving Stories) Fact or Fiction?

This might be an interesting string of comments... I'm sure others have 'heard' of past Showcase do's and don'ts:

For example: In 84-85' we had one of the 'new' dark grey bread trucks (There are a few photos on this site of it) that had the sliding door next to the suicide seat.

Here's the DON'T:
Don't lean any part of your body out of the OPEN suicide door when driving from a school or into a school.... Why?

Here's the Fact or Fiction:
"I toured with 'this guy' who had his arm hanging out the door as we were driving off we took a sharp corner, the door SLAMMED Shut on his arm and broke it in two places. His arm was cast in the emergency room that night, he was given a box of pain pills and was playing (GUITAR) at the next morning show."

I actually think this is true...but figured I'd throw it out there and ask: FACT OR FICTION..

If FACT: Who was the Dude who broke his arm (raise your hand if you can...;-) and what year did this happen?

Let the comments begin...

Information about a 45 record I found!

Okay, so I purchased a 45 record (we all remember those, don't we) that is by "Free Fare" on Showcase records. It is the songs "Hey, Big Brother" and "He Ain't Heavy". Could anyone give more information about this 45. Just wondering what year, who was involved, and other pertinent information. As a member of showcase in the late 80's, I don't remember any discussion about past recordings, but it could have just slipped my mind.

In addition, Didn't the super group record a Cassette and CD in '88 or '89? For some reason I seem to remember this, but it is all a little "Hazie" (sorry, bad pun. . . . .).

Lowell, Barb, Ralph & Chris Watkins and myself were Terry's guests at his show in St. Pete at the Mahaffey Theater.

For some reason I seem to remember this, but it is all a little "Hazie" (sorry, bad pun. . . . .).

Cool, so now you're in. Here's what you'll want to check out first to get a good feel for this community:

1) If you want to search for somebody click the SEARCH link on top or use the Google Search link, and I placed a couple of search links on the left hand side bar. Who loves ya?

2) The Photo Gallery: http://www.youngamericanshowcase.com/gallery/albums.php If you have photos that you would like uploaded, send Keith Phelps, Val McNabb Pope, or Matthew Phillips an e-mail or a note from your YAS "inbox" (look under your name on the left) and we'll tell you how to do it. If you use the YAS inbox please type any of our names exactly as I've listed here.

3) The Forums:

Young American Showcase | Free Fare, Freedom Jam, The Edge, XL: New Members Please Register & Upload All Your Photos!

For some reason I seem to remember this, but it is all a little "Hazie" (sorry, bad pun. . . . .).

Young American Showcase | Free Fare, Freedom Jam, The Edge, XL: New Members Please Register & Upload All Your Photos!

Picked it up at a rummage sale in Waukesha, WI.  The seller saw the group in the '70s.

Ok, what tour was this? Who was the manager?

Hiroshi

We have a Showcase siting. Didi Hardley was watching a re-run of Ophrah.  Paul Anka was on and introduced his accompaniest as Hiroshi Upshur.  Hiroshi was part of the Phil Hardley Free Fare around 1975.
